PTML was developed, financed and is operated by the Grimaldi Group under the first Build, Operate and Transfer port concession in Nigeria’s maritime history, signed with the Nigerian Ports Authority in 2005. Today the terminal spans more than 230,000 square metres at Tin Can Island, complemented by over 250,000 square metres of bonded off-dock capacity at Mile 2 — connected by a dedicated fleet of barges and tugs.
Our role is straightforward: to receive your vessel on arrival, to handle and protect your cargo, and to release it through clear, published procedures. In 2025 the terminal received over 100 vessel calls and handled more than 200,000 cargo units: over 113,000 vehicles and rolling units — including substantial transhipment flows consolidated in Lagos for onward carriage to Europe and Africa — approximately 100,000 TEUs of containers, and over 20,000 units of general and project cargo.

PTML is the leading RoRo terminal in West Africa and the principal vehicle gateway for the Nigerian market. At its peak in the early 2020s the terminal consistently received over 200,000 vehicles per annum; in 2025 it handled more than 113,000 vehicles and rolling units across imports, exports and transhipment, with annual capacity of up to 400,000 units across the main terminal and Mile 2, depending on dwell time. Since 2024 PTML has deliberately diversified, consolidating its position as a major hub not only for RoRo but equally for containers.
Every vehicle is recorded at discharge, tracked throughout its stay on terminal, and released through a documented gate process. Importers can locate their unit at any time through the online parking slot search, and take delivery either at Tin Can Island or — for units transferred by barge — at Mile 2, away from port traffic.
PTML is the RoRo transhipment hub of West Africa. In July 2024 the terminal became the first port facility in the region to handle a transhipment operation on the scale of the Grande Houston call — 5,489 new vehicles loaded in China, discharged, consolidated and reloaded at PTML for onward carriage to ports in Europe and across Africa. Transhipment has since become a structural part of the terminal’s business, with thousands of units consolidated in Lagos every month for onward carriage.
The operation that global carriers and manufacturers entrust to PTML rests on three things: berth availability on arrival, secured paved capacity to hold high-value units, and the productivity to discharge and reload large parcels within days.
PTML operates a full container service handling approximately 85,000 TEUs in 2025, with capacity of up to 200,000 TEUs per annum. Containers are positioned for customs examination within 24 hours of request and delivered within two hours of presentation of a valid Terminal Delivery Order. Forty reefer plugs support refrigerated cargo.
PTML is also a major export terminal and a key facility for the export of cocoa and other Nigerian commodities. The export process — booking, VGM, stuffing and barge transfer of export boxes from Mile 2 — is managed end-to-end through PTML’s online platform, allowing exporters to deliver cargo at Mile 2 and bypass the port corridor entirely.
Alongside its scheduled Grimaldi services, PTML receives general cargo and break bulk vessels of all operators. No facility in Lagos is better equipped to handle cargo that cannot be containerised: project cargo and heavy lifts, steel coils, plates, billets and rails, pipes, paper and board products, jumbo bags and rolling equipment.
The terminal’s crane capacity — up to 250 tonnes — together with its fleet of heavy forklifts and trailers and its available yard area allow break bulk vessels to be guaranteed berthing on arrival and worked at a guaranteed productivity of 1,200 tonnes per hook per shift, with a 40,000-tonne vessel typically discharged in 14 to 16 days. Cargo can be delivered to receivers directly, or discharged onto PTML’s own barges for transfer to the Mile 2 bonded terminals.
PTML offers bonded storage at scale across Tin Can Island and Mile 2 — secured, paved, customs-controlled capacity for vehicles, containers and general cargo, with documented inventory control and full traceability. Commercial storage programmes for fleet importers, manufacturers and distributors are quoted on application.
